DSC_0055aA few blogs back I introduced you to Labrador Life Line’s Vice President and Triage Chair Cindy Sherburne. This week I would like to you to meet Labrador Life Line’s Top Dog–President Eric Moe.  From the president to the interns, everyone at Labrador Life Line is a volunteer.

Their payment? Success stories.
Their dedication? Inspirational and unmatched.

Despite growing up Lab-less (he had grown up with a retriever of another kind–a golden one–named Lady), Labrador Life Line President Eric Moe is a self proclaimed “Lab Lover.”

After seeing a posting requesting volunteers on a Lab forum, Eric decided to join LLL. For Eric, joining Labrador Life Line was the natural thing to do.

As a Lab lover, it seemed like a worthy thing to do.”

Like most nonprofit organizations, many people at Labrador Life Line have come and gone since Eric first joined. Six years after joining, Eric’s commitment to Labs hasn’t changed. Perhaps the reason is the satisfaction he receives when he reads an update from an owner whose dog Labrador Life Line was able to help fund.

Getting updates on the dogs we have helped, seeing how well they are doing, and how happy people are that we were able to help them, and help their companion.”

Rewards like these are priceless.

But it is Eric’s empathy for the fellow Lab owners that come to Labrador Life Line for help that makes him one of Labrador Life Line’s strongest advocates.

Two days after I brought Bear home from the shelter, he came down with parvo. I had never even heard of parvo. The vet said it could be very expensive to treat and may not even save his life. Eric reflects, then continues, echoing the sentiments of all Lab owners.

I was not going to give up on him and no matter the cost I was going to try. Not everyone is in a position to do that for their companion. Labrador Life Line gives hope to many, who otherwise had none.”

It is that offer of hope (for owners) and that chance they provide (for the Lab) that keeps Labrador Life Line and its members (like Eric and all the other committed members) going strong.

IMG_0527Last week my Mom wrote about all the ways you can support Labrador Life Line.

Today, on behalf of all Labs, I want to say, ”Thank You!”

Strictly run by volunteers, and web-based, this allows your donations to go even further!

As a supporter of Labrador Life Line, your donations give us the opportunity to change the lives of the people and Labs that come to us for assistance. Whether or not a case is a matter of life or death, each case is important, and potentially life changing,  for both the Lab and those who love and care for them.

In 2012, Labrador Life Line took in $39,831. $31,476  was paid directly to veterinarians for the medical care of 75 Labradors in need.

In other words, 91.3 cents of every dollar raised went directly to Labs in need!

Again, of behalf all Labs and Labrador Life Line, a special thank you to all our supporters and donors!

Until next week….

Ginger

Don’t eat that!

Dogs can’t have…(you fill in the blank).”

Don’t feed (fill in your name here).

“She/he can’t have/eat that.”

Sound familiar?

Common household phrases, rules, whatever you call them, heard many times throughout our daily life.

My favorite?

When it comes to eating human food, often coined by humans is the term, “table scraps.” I don’t know about you, I have never even tasted (or even begged for) a table, never mind a scrap from one.

Unfortunately for us, the best human food tends to be what our parents call ”chocolate” or “candy. While we may not be allowed to enjoy or indulge in these delicious treats, there is a way for us to enjoy life savers candy. The organization my mom is a board member of–Labrador Life Line has a program called, The Life Savers (not the candy) program and it is a way that our parents can donate money to LLL and help save us. The Life Savers program, according to my mom, allows them to help more Labs in need. Since the need for money is always constant, The Life Savers, through their monthly gift, provides LLL with “continuous, reliable support that is essential to helping the many Labs that come to us for financial assistance.

All they have to do sign up on the LLL web site, and in cooperation with PayPal, (whoever they are, you don’t have to pay me, I’ll always be my mom’s best pal) your parents can pick a monthly plan that’s best for them. Mom says not to worry, her friends at LLL say it’s safe and secure, and all gifts are tax deductible.

While we can’t always eat human food, we can enjoy one, Life Savers (again, not the candy.)

Thanks to all our current and future Life Savers, all of you deserve a huge lick for your gift.

Ginger
PS Isn’t it funny? Something we can’t eat, can save us?

Excuse me….got a minute?

I’d like to talk to you straight from the heart.

Thank goodness you love Labs. While not all of the cases presented to
Labrador Life Line for funding assistance are urgent or life threatening, they
are all heartbreaking. Despite their best intentions, owners can’t always afford
the treatment their best friend needs to get well. These Labs (and their owners)
need some help.

Fortunately these Labs have friends like you. With your help, Labrador Life
Line assists purebred Labrador Retrievers in need of emergency care or medical
treatment whose owners or rescues have a financial need. Our help sometimes
means the difference between life and death.

If there was just one thing you could do to help these Labs in distress, you would,
wouldn’t you?

The truth is, you can.

Register now and participate in Labrador Life Line’s Heart Dog Auction.

All money raised helps Labrador Retrievers in need of medical care and treatment.

With your support, Labrador Life Line helped 70 Labs in 2012.

The auction begins February 1st and runs through February 15/16th.

To register go to:

From all the board members and the Labs we have yet to meet, a heartfelt thanks
for your continued support and participation.

The other day I was babysitting my niece and nephews and we watched the Walt Disney animated movie “The Aristocats.”  For those who haven’t seen it, or, like me, it has been awhile, here is a brief recap. The film tells the story of Madame Bonfamille, an elderly woman who changes her will to leave everything to her precious and pampered pet, Duchess, and the cat’s three kittens.

Okay. I know what you are thinking. This is a dog blog, why are we talking cats? But it got me wondering about dogs (real ones, not animated ones.) I’m sure most of us recall the late hotel magnate Leona Helmsley who left her Maltese pooch $12 Million when she died.

Did you know…an estimated 1,000,000 dogs in the U.S. have been named as the primary beneficiaries in their owner’s will?

However much we might like to think of our dogs as our best friends and family members with four legs, the truth is, it is illegal to name Fido or Spot as a beneficiary in our will. Simply put, dogs (cats too), are considered property. But, while Fido cannot inherit anything from you directly, you can establish a pet trust to ensure he is provided for after you die. Just a word to the wise…not every state offers this alternative for Spot yet, so, be sure to check to see if your state does.

Although I can’t leave anything to my beloved Labs, Shadow and Ginger, it got me to thinking. What would I leave them if I could?

How about you? What would you leave your pet? Tell us what you would want to leave your pet if you could.

Until next time,

Wendy

Did you know…contrary to popular belief, dogs aren’t colorblind! In fact, dogs can see in color, just not as well as humans do. While the debate of whether or not Fido sees color may be over, the debate now is which colors they can detect and decipher. A 2008 Psychology Today article reported that, like many humans, dogs tend to be dichromatic (or red-green colorblind.)

What does this all mean?

It means that you may want to buy more blue and yellow toys, and less red and green toys.

Doggie toys, clothes (for humans and dogs), treats, and much, much more will be up for bid soon. Starting on August 31st, Labrador Life Line’s yearly Labour of Love Auction kicks into full gear with all proceeds going to purebred Labs in need of medical care and treatment. More details to come….

Until the next time…play hard…and safe!!

In the Disney/Pixar movie Up!, one of the movie tag lines used to promote the movie was line, “but it’s a talking dog!” There was no doubt in my mind Disney and Pixar were trying to lure a dog loving crowd to see their “talking dog.“  In the movie (okay, I bought it over a year and finally had an opportunity to watch it this past week), all the dogs in the movie speak because of a special collar invented by the film’s villain.

What dog owner (this one included), at one time or another doesn’t secretly wish their four-legged family member could speak back to them? What if someday, an inventor does come along and creates a device that does allow them to speak. What would they sy back to us? What would they say to each other? What would their voices sound like?

It got me to thinking about my Labs–Shadow (black) and Ginger (yellow.) I big fan of old time radio shows, I thought that Shadow, if she were male, would have sounded Orson Wells-like. After all, Wells was the voice of Lamont Cranston, AKA The Shadow on the old radio program “The Shadow” for several years. If I close my eyes, I can hear the old tag line, “The Shadow knows…” coming from her mouth and her chuckling just like “The Shadow” whenever she would get into some type of mischief.

Always trying to escape the “shadow” of her sister that came before her, Ginger always seemed to have a mind of her own. Ginger’s voice was tougher for me to imagine. I knew it would not sound airy like Ginger on Gilligan’s Island. Ginger was more of Midwestern type of a gal like me and would be more of a Mary Ann.

Share with us what your dog would your dog sound like if they could talk? What would they say? In the meantime, check out this funny video of a talking dog that I stumbled upon when writing this blog.

Until next time,

Wendy
