In the Disney/Pixar movie Up!, one of the movie tag lines used to promote the movie was line, “but it’s a talking dog!” There was no doubt in my mind Disney and Pixar were trying to lure a dog loving crowd to see their “talking dog.“  In the movie (okay, I bought it over a year and finally had an opportunity to watch it this past week), all the dogs in the movie speak because of a special collar invented by the film’s villain.

What dog owner (this one included), at one time or another doesn’t secretly wish their four-legged family member could speak back to them? What if someday, an inventor does come along and creates a device that does allow them to speak. What would they sy back to us? What would they say to each other? What would their voices sound like?

It got me to thinking about my Labs–Shadow (black) and Ginger (yellow.) I big fan of old time radio shows, I thought that Shadow, if she were male, would have sounded Orson Wells-like. After all, Wells was the voice of Lamont Cranston, AKA The Shadow on the old radio program “The Shadow” for several years. If I close my eyes, I can hear the old tag line, “The Shadow knows…” coming from her mouth and her chuckling just like “The Shadow” whenever she would get into some type of mischief.

Always trying to escape the “shadow” of her sister that came before her, Ginger always seemed to have a mind of her own. Ginger’s voice was tougher for me to imagine. I knew it would not sound airy like Ginger on Gilligan’s Island. Ginger was more of Midwestern type of a gal like me and would be more of a Mary Ann.

Share with us what your dog would your dog sound like if they could talk? What would they say? In the meantime, check out this funny video of a talking dog that I stumbled upon when writing this blog.

Until next time,

Wendy
